Why bamboo schools?
So far, schools in Nepal were built according to the so-called "Japanese type" . It is a JAICA type of construction, which originated in the 70s. The structure consists of stone bearing walls, steel beams and roofing of corrugated iron. The window openings are not of glass, because of the climate, but are fitted with bars.
Therefore, the schools build in this way look unnatural and unappealing in the Nepalese countryside. But they are also not very satisfactory from the point of view of hygiene (e.g. poor lighting, bad ventilation etc). Materials used for construction look industrial, and do not make the buildings very self-sustainable; as much of the material has to be imported from outside the area. The absence of colours and the presence of bars on the windows also negatively affects, not only children, but also teachers; thereby disrupting the learning process.
Therefore, we decided to initiate a project called "Bamboo schools". The new Architectural/Civil engineering project of a school prototype is designed using traditional and locally available materials, with emphasis on compliance with the elementary principles of organic architecture and engineering.
The draft of "bamboo schools" allows for the use of locally available materials in innovative ways; and it is therefore necessary before starting the actual construction to experimentally verify the functioning of the proposed materials and technologies in the specific conditions of the place of construction, with the help of local experts. Specifically: the design and anchoring of the supporting truss structure of bamboo trunks; the bearing walls of compacted clay, including its treatment from the weather; and the application of roofing material (or all strata) of different materials that meet the primary acoustic properties suitable for noise reduction in strong seasonal monsoon rains.
